Florida Elementary’s Christmas Play Canned

Officials say secular symbols might make people think of the holiday.

The kids at Windmill Point Elementary in Port St. Lucie, Fla., were into their second day of rehearsals for “A Penguin Christmas” when they got word the show was canned. Why? Because school officials determined the mention of Christmas and the secular symbols in the play, such as Santa Claus, might lead people to think of the Christian holiday.

Janice Karst, a spokeswoman for the school district, told Family News in Focus the goal was simply to avoid offending anyone.

“We’re a very diverse and very inclusive community,” she said. “We have to consider every child, every day.”
