The phenomenon of finding ballots cast by those who have passed away is sparking some alarm in New York, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

A statewide database contains records of about 77,000 deceased New Yorkers –as many as 2,600 of them have voted from the grave.

Some votes can be attributed to a simple clerical error, as in the case of Betty L. Johnson who died in 2003 of heart failure. A vote was recorded in her name in 2004 but the error was traced right back to her daughter, Betty J. Johnson who accidentally signed beside her mother’s name on Election Day.

Sometimes there are people who have been mistakenly recorded as deceased who are not — such as Hilde Stafford of Wappinger Falls. Her death date is listed as June 15, 1997.
