Florida has entered the stem-cell research race, but the state’s new chief executive says the proposed program will only support research using ethically derived cells.

Newly elected Florida Gov. Charlie Crist surprised virtually everyone Wednesday by recommending the state Legislature allocate $20 million in grants that are limited to research using adult stem cells or cells taken from umbilical-cord blood and amniotic fluid.

“Every day, the miracles of science give hope to Floridians and their loved ones, and this funding will move stem-cell research forward,” Crist said.
