B.C. Creator Mixed Comics, Christianity

Johnny Hart, who sprinkled Christian themes throughout his celebrated comic strip B.C., died Saturday from a stroke. He was 76.

Creators Syndicate Founder and President Rick Newcombe told Editor & Publisher that Hart was a talented, hard-working cartoonist who was also kind and generous. His two comics — B.C. and The Wizard of Id — each run in more than 1,200 newspapers.

His comic strips were not without controversy. While Christians reveled in his witness, the mainstream media went on the attack, claiming bias and offense. After the L.A. Times censored one of his strips, Hart told WORLD magazine that he believed his treatment by the Times was symptomatic of the battle for America’s soul, and that he liked “the idea that this has gotten Christians up in arms. That’s what they all need.”
