N.C. County Approves Invocation Policy

North Carolina’s Transylvania County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to adopt an invocation policy that preserves the tradition of opening meetings with a prayer.

The American Civil Liberties Union had threatened legal action – demanding that public prayer be censored or silenced.

Mike Johnson, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, said his organization helped the county draft a policy that clearly spells out the constitutionality of the practice.

“It’s ridiculous that, in a country founded on religious liberty, the right to open a meeting with prayer would be under attack,” he said. “We believe this policy effectively provides guidance to public officials who want to uphold the long-established American tradition.”
