North Dakota OKs Abortion Trigger Bill

Both houses of the North Dakota Legislature voted Monday in support of a bill that would ban most abortions if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. It includes exceptions for cases of rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.

Gov. John Hoeven, a Republican, has said he will sign it.

Under the bill, which would require extra approval should the high court act, anyone who conducts an abortion would get up to five years in prison and face a $5,000 fine.

The bill “furthers the culture of life, so that we don’t turn our back on unborn children or the women who carry them,” Christopher Dodson of the North Dakota Catholic Conference told United Press International.
